Member Types

Active Membership


Active membership is open to any individual who meets at least one of the following requirements. Only this class of membership carries voting privileges. Only active members in good standing may serve as officers.

1. An individual who has successfully completed the Certified Paralegal (CP) Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) Examination of NALA,

or

2. An individual who has graduated from an ABA approved program of study for legal assistants,

or

3. An individual who has graduated from a course of study for legal assistants which is institutionally accredited but not ABA approved, and which requires not less than the equivalent of 60 semester hours of classroom study,

or

4. An individual who has graduated from a course of study for legal assistants other than those set forth in 2 and 3 above, plus not less than six months of in-house training as a legal assistant, whose attorney-employer attests to same,

or

5. An individual who has received a baccalaureate degree in any field, plus not less than six months in-house training as a legal assistant whose attorney-employer attests to same,

or

6. An individual who has a minimum of three years of law related experience under the supervision of an attorney, including at least six months of in-house training as a legal assistant, whose attorney-employer attests to same,

or

7. An individual who has a minimum of two years of in-house training as a legal assistant, whose attorney-employer attests to same.

Associate Membership


Associate membership is open to any individual who meets at least one of the following qualifications:

1. Any individual who has seven (7) years of law related experience under the supervision of a member of the Bar Association,

or

2. Any individual who has obtained certification as a Professional Legal Secretary (PLS). Student Membership Student membership is open to individuals who are students in good standing at any university, college, junior college, or other school, and are pursuing an approved course of study in legal assistant training or law.

This membership is available to those local or state organizations which, by their aims or objectives, constitutions, bylaws, or practice are functioning in harmony with the objectives and aims of this Association and NALA, subject however, to the recommendation of the Board of Directors and the majority vote of the active membership.

Individual:


This membership is available to any individual who meets at least one of the following qualifications:

1. Any individual currently employed in a legal assistant capacity whose field of expertise required specialized training in ancillary areas, including but not limited to accounting, nursing, real estate, etc. Membership under this category will be a the discretion of the Membership Committee,

or

2. Any member of the Bar Association endorsing the legal assistant concept or involved in the promotion of the legal assistant profession,

or

3. Any member in the educational field endorsing the legal assistant concept or who promoted the legal assistant profession.
